Reinventing Hobbies As Subjects!

“Kya beta? acha result ayaa ki nahi?”

Haven’t we all heard this statement from a random aunty whom we have no idea about? Suddenly the people who you barely know care about your results? Isn’t this a very common situation in every student’s life?

As students so much importance is put on getting good grades and good marks. So many students are conditioned to believe that they are good for nothing and worthless and that they are just disappointments to the world. How often do we that the idea of getting good marks and having a good life are linked together despite there being no relation so many students suffer because they can’t live up to the pressure of doing well in school and they question themselves and their self-esteem?

But is getting good grades and good results really that important?

There have been so many instances where even the students who haven’t done well in school have made it in life. Just think about it. When people like Serena Williams or Amitabh Bachchan get awards do people care about how good their grades were? NO!

So it is important to know that grades do not determine ones strength and individuality. It is in fact the individuals potential and hard work that determines his or her level of success and well being. Getting bad results or grades does not mean that it is the end of the world and it certainly does not determine one’s future. So let’s stop giving so much importance to something so unnecessary and instead focus on real learning and growth because in the long run that is the result that actually matters.

Commonly, we hear students constantly complain about them having to stress about lessons, studies and result at school or college. They are often fed up and want to attend college only because they are forced to. This situation is growing only to be worse. So the question is how do we break this cycle? How do we change the system for the better?

The answer is simple. Teach students what they are actually interested to learn. Teach students the things that grab their attention and interest. An excellent idea would be their hobbies. Hobbies are an excellent way for encouraging one to develop his skills. Moreover, this will help the student to learn and develop his or her skills.

Why Should Hobbies be Included in school as a subject?

These hobbies should be treated as subjects in schools and college this will enable curiosity and love for the subject. In addition to this, the student will not feel overburdened as the hobby is enjoyed by the student.

Let us assume a child enjoys engaging himself in sports activities and likes to spend his time doing so. He may prefer to spend his time playing sports rather than spend time studying. So if a particular sports activity is taught as a subject rather than the child is more likely to pay attention to that and excel.

Schools and colleges must understand this and apply this idea in the curriculum. This will not only result in the likelihood of the student is good at that but also help the student to enjoy learning and grow with experience. This will facilitate a multi-dimensional growth and development scale for students and help them achieve success in their life since they will know what they are good at genuinely enjoy doing, as opposed to being forced to do something they are not interested to do in the first place. Hence it is high time that hobbies should be reinvented and treated as subjects in schools or colleges.

The first paragraph of our article has touched the matter with the needle. It is this societal pressure that makes us give too much ado to marks and grades

I agree. Even if the methodologies of teaching could change in schools and colleges, it would be so much better. A person might not know what he is interested in and might end up liking the subjects from curriculum just because of the way it is taught. Hobbies are another go! Nice reading, Gail.

Very well written. You know what you are capable of more than anyone else, and it does not really matter what others say.

I truly agree with your thoughts Gail! Suddenly the opinions of those matter who do not even know what hardships we face. and what are marks? Basically symbolizing our retention of facts easily available
