Be Skilled For This Century

Be skilled this century

As renowned poet, Tuli Kupferberg once said, “When patterns are broken, new worlds emerge.”

Statistically speaking, by 2020, an estimate of 133 million new roles will emerge in response to the new division of labor between humans, machines and algorithms. Given the nature of this, the employers are looking beyond the basic academic information, the basic skills. They are now focusing on 21st century skills, those who have the capability and capacity to think out of the box, to push boundaries and jump over hurdles without tripping.

Employers are now seeking employees who not only do as told, but go beyond the regular pattern. They are searching for people to break the pattern, create new ideas and new worlds within them, for people who go against the dogma, the presumed rules and regulations, the societal norms and invent, discover and appreciate the new, the unknown. Along with your ability to learn facts and understand ideas, now the epicenter is gradually shifting towards the new age skills as well, balancing the scales.

In today’s world, we often hear the phrase “21st century skills”, but how many of us really know what it means? Not many. Let us tell you. 21st century skills are those abilities that break the patterns, push the limits and help one create and explore a new world. These are those competencies that set you apart from the crowd and make you stand out. They are the factors that increase your chances of success. In more technical terms, 21st  century skills comprise abilities, and learning dispositions that have been identified as being required for success in 21st century society and workplaces by educators, business leaders, academics, and governmental agencies. In fact, many of these skills are associated with a deeper learning and understanding of the subject. Some these skills are critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, effective communication, flexibility and many many more.

Now, the next question is what is the standing of these skills? Are academics more important than them on the weighing scale, or less? Let us consider this by taking one of the most common phrases we come across during childhood as an example: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and all play and no work makes Jack a dumb boy”. This tries to imply that an interplay of both make Jack a brilliant boy. Similarly, the truth is both of academics and skills are equally important. Moreover, they complement each other. No one can secure their prospects in education or a job by just having an excellent academic background or just having modernized skills. In order to make a change, both are needed.

If truth be told, there have been cases wherein a person’s academic skills were not up to the mark, but his or her 21st century skills have allowed them to reach the heights of success. For example, Bill Gates, one of the world’s most successful people, dropped out of  renowned Harvard University but let his skills steer him to the top. Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, one of the topmost technology companies, dropped out of college as well. But it was his innovation that helped him design the products that are known so widely in the world today. Numerous other people have dropped out of high school and college, but they have all had one thing in common: 21st century skills.

In the life of a student, these 21st century skills are more important now than ever before. They not only provide a framework for successful learning in the classroom, but ensure students can thrive in a world where change is constant and learning never stops. Further, the World Economic Forum even lists analytical thinking and innovation, technology design and programming, Emotional Intelligence and cognitive flexibility among others in the Top 15 skills of the 2020’s.
