All these dialogues are only meant to confuse the poor teenagers and their parents. The reality is that even they don’t know about it. Here are some thoughts about choosing the best for you:
You know we always try to reach out the best options. Right from food to our outfit, we try to make choose our level best. What is best for us? How will we actually know? Have you read the famous poem, “The road not taken” by Robert Frost?
“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;”
Whenever life gives you choices, it is very confusing. Choosing between them is not easy. All these choices might look good one way or the other. But which is the right one for you?
What will happen if you end up choosing the wrong one?
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
How will you choose?
First, you must be aware of all the alternatives i.e. you should check whether there is any other road. You shouldn’t miss any opportunity just because you were unaware of it, So, make sure that you have all the option before you.
Next, evaluate each option before you. You should list down all the positives and negatives. You should also consider the best and worst result of choosing this option. After that compare the effort needed, required time period, results, positives, and negatives.
Choose the one which makes you feel very confident and where you actually feel like giving a bit of your effort and time. You must be comfortable in choosing that option. The risk and hurdles involved are natural and you must understand that and must be able to cope up with that. “You are free to choose, but you are not free from the consequence of your choice”. This saying must not scare you. You must prepare yourself even for the worst consequence of choosing that option.
You must be eligible enough to get a large number of options. You must work hard and make yourself eligible for any of the options.
Imagine that a student has 4 colleges in his preference list. The first college is an aided national institution. The tuition fee is a nominal amount. The placement and opportunities are very high. But the college is located in a very far remote area. The next is a state level aided institution. The tuition fee is a nominal amount. Placement is also fine. The college is within the capital city. The third is a very reputed private college in the capital city with a decent placement opportunity but the tuition fee is quite high. The fourth institution is a local institution with a very low placement and a moderate amount of fee. The student must score enough marks so that he will get admission to these four colleges. So that he can choose between these colleges.
The most important thing after making a choice is your effort in making that choice right. In the absence of the required effort, can make the best choice, the worst.
Choosing the least opted is never wrong. Even if you choose the worst of all options, the right amount of effort and strategic planning may give you unexpected results.
As Robert Frost said in “Road not taken”,
“I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
You never know what awaits you in the future. Choose wisely. Give your best and be ready to take care of the rest. One choice can change your whole life.
If you’re a good choice maker, you can choose the best emotional responses and choose the best new life paths, forward and upward. – Karen Salmansohn
